Common questions
How do I work out a discount?
Multiply the price by the discount percentage and divide by 100 to get the saving, then take it off the price. 25% off £80 is £20 off, so you pay £60.
Is 20% off plus an extra 10% off the same as 30% off?
No. The extra 10% comes off the already-reduced price, so the total is 28% off. On £100 you pay £72, not £70.
How do I find the original price before a discount?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). If you paid £60 after 25% off, the original price was £60 ÷ 0.75 = £80.
Are sale prices always a real saving?
Not always. UK rules say a “was” price should be one the item was genuinely sold at for a reasonable period, but it is worth checking price history.
How do I take VAT off a price?
Use our VAT calculator to remove 20% VAT correctly. Divide by 1.2 rather than taking 20% off.
