How Payment Plus works

Payment Plus is the HMPPS rate for extra hours worked on top of your contract. It rose by £1 to £23 an hour from 1 April 2026. It is taxed and has National Insurance taken off like normal pay, but it is not pensionable.

A new Band 3 officer working 20 hours of Payment Plus a month earns £460 extra before tax, and keeps about £331 of it, or £16.56 an hour.

If Payment Plus takes your total income over £50,270, the part above is taxed at 40%, so you keep less of each extra hour.
