Amounts from September 2026

PaymentRangeExtra take-home a month at the minimum
TLR1£10,531 to £17,819£542

TLR3£727 to £3,600£39
SEN allowance£2,885 to £5,690£123

Based on a teacher on M6 outside London. A TLR can push you into a higher pension tier, which is why the extra take-home is less than you might expect.

What each one is for

  • TLR1 and TLR2: for a permanent responsibility, such as leading a subject or a key stage. TLR1 usually includes line managing other staff.
  • TLR3: for a time-limited project, such as a curriculum change. It can be paid for up to a set period.
  • SEN allowance: for teachers in a special school, or in a role that needs SEN expertise in a mainstream school.
