What GPs do
GPs are specialists in general practice. They see patients of all ages with any problem, manage long-term conditions, prescribe, refer to hospital specialists and lead primary care teams.
Salaried GPs and partners
Salaried GPs are employed by a practice or other NHS body on a set salary. GP partners own the practice and share its profits instead, so their income varies widely and is not shown here.
How to become a GP
After the foundation programme, GP specialty training usually takes three years, split between hospital and general practice posts. You need to pass the MRCGP exams, then join the GMC GP register.
